Pulicat Bird Sanctuary
Area : 600 sq km.
Description: The Pulicat Bird Sanctuary set in the Pulicat Lake, a large brackish water lagoon formed out of the backwaters of Bay of Bengal, supports a rich biodiversity. Watchtowers and binoculars for hire facilitate watching birds. Among the migratory birds, the flamingos are the largest in number, with about 15,000 visiting Pulicat every year. Another point of interest for the bird enthusiast are the grey herons and cormorants which breed here. The Environmental Education Centre situated within the sanctuary provides visitors with information about the birds of Pulicat as well as migratory birds.
Prominent Birds: A large variety of birds, both native and migratory, like the flamingos, grey pelicans, herons, painted storks, egret's gulls, terns, cormorants, egrets, open billed storks, white ibises, spot billed ducks, shoe vellers, pintails, spoonbills and other water birds can be seen at the Pulicat Bird Sanctuary.

Access: By Road: Pulicat bird sanctuary is located 60 km north of Chennai city on the National Highway 5 and can be the highway at 5 places. It is about 1 km on the eastern side of NH-5 at Tada, Bheemulavari Palem and Arambakkam. A road from Sullurpet leads to the Sriharikota area of the Pulicat lake.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is at Chennai.

Sri Lankamalleswara Sanctuary
Area: 464 sq km
Description: The Sri Lankamalleswara Sanctuary is set in a dry deciduous mixed thorn forest with deep gorges and steep slopes. Red sanders is endemic to this area. The sanctuary is best known for being the habitat of the rare and highly endangered double-banded or Jerdon's courser.

Neelapattu Sanctuary
Area:458.92 ha
Description: Neelapattu is one of the largest Pelicanries in South-East Asia and serves as a breeding ground for more than 1500 pelicans every year. The sanctuary also harbours several species of winter migratory birds and is the breeding ground for rare and endangered species. Neelapattu also serves as a roosting site for several species of water birds with the Barringtonia acutangula trees around a tank in the sanctuary being preferred by birds tree for perching and nesting since the rest of the forest is southern dry evergreen scrub forest.
Prominent Birds: Some of the birds which can be spotted at Neelapattu are grey or spot-billed pelicans, open-billed storks, little cormorants, spoonbills, white ibis, night herons like egrets, terns, ducks, waders, pied crested cuckoo, common hawk cuckoo, etc.
Season : The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to March.
Other Prominent Animals: The reserve forest of the Neelapattu bird sanctuary houses animals like the jackal, slender loris, spotted deer, hares, snakes, tortoise, monitor lizard, etc. The area around a tank in the sanctuary harbours a wide variety of colourful butterflies.
