Khavda
FLAMINGO COLONY

Description:Khavda in Gujarat has the largest flamingo colony in the world. Each year, about half a million flamingos migrate from hotter climates to the watery expanse of this area to breed before heading back, creating an annual display which is worth seeing.

Prominent Birds: Flamingo, putter-fish, stork, heron, ibis, pelican, wader.

Best time to visit: The best season to visit Khavda is from October to March.

How to get there : The flamingo colony can be approached on camel back only from Khavda.

Pirotan Marine Sanctuary

Area: 458 sq km

Description : The Pirotan Marine Sanctuary, an archipelago of 42 islands set in the Arabian Sea and spread over an area of about 458 sq km in the Gulf of Kachh is India's first Marine National Park. The coral reef formations, some fringed by mangrove forests, are fascinating, ranging from the convoluted brain coral to others shaped like horns. Of interest to the avian enthusiast is the dense mangrove growth which provides nesting and roosting sites to a variety of birds. But the most fascinating time is when the tide turns - thousands of shore birds grab the chance to feed on a variety of beached marine life. The summer and the monsoons are also a hectic time when more than 30 species of birds nest on the island shores and in the canopies of the mangrove trees.

Prominent Birds: Putter-fish, stork, heron, ibis, flamingo, pelican, wader, crab plover, darters, terns, terek sandpiper, oyster catcher and sanderling.

Prominent Marine Life: The waters of the Gulf of Kachh are home to a variety of marine life including the dolphin, the finless porpoise, octopus, turtles, shrimp, sponge, eels, sea urchin and dugong sea cow.

Best Season: The best time to visit the Pirotan Sanctuary is from December to mid-June.

Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary

The wetlands of the Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary near the Nalsarovar lake is a great place to view birds. A seasonal lake spread over 115 sq km, Nalsarovar harbours over 250 species of birds. Small boats carry visitors close enough to see birds like the kingfisher dive head-first into the water to spear fish with their dagger-like beaks.

Prominent birds: Birds sheltered in the Nalsarovar bird sanctuary include jacanas, moorhens, coots, grebes, kingfishers, egrets, darters, storks, cormorants and ducks.

Best season: The best time to visit this sanctuary is from December to mid-June.

Accommodation : The Forest Rest House and the Nalsarovar Palace are comfortable places for visitors who wish to stay overnight.

Thol Wildlife Sanctuary
The wetlands of the Thol Wildlife Sanctuary near Thol lake is a great place to view birds.

Prominent Birds: The Thol lake is a good place to see a rich profusion of wild fowls, flamingos, grey pelicans, black ibis and a host of other wetland birds.

Best season: The best time to visit this sanctuary is from December to mid-June.

Khijadia Bird Sanctuary

Area: 600 hectares

Description: The Khijadia Lake, about 10 km across, has three freshwater scales surrounded by salt pans and salt marshes which are an important staging post for migratory birds.

Prominent birds : Migratory birds like swallows, martins and wagtails and many waterfowl are sheltered in this sanctuary.

Access : The nearest town is Jamnagar, which is well-connected with the rest of the country.
