KOLKATTA

Kolkata, the largest metropolis in India and the British Raj's first port city is the commercial capital of the east. Major industrial plants, textile mills and corporate houses are situated here along with administrative offices, posh hotels and busy bazaars.

Kolkata, an ancient city three hundred years of age, has adapted to the modern trends and techniques of the world but yet not shed the leisurely life style and the calm which it has accumulated over the ages. Kolkata developed from a fishermen's village to become one of the largest cities in the world. Being the capital of the British till 1912, the architecture here is a medley of occidental and oriental styles. The Maidan, a huge stretch of green in front of the majestic Victoria Memorial, the flower sellers on the banks of the mighty Hooghly river, the well stocked Museum, the theatres, the gracious facades of the luxury hotels and the ever-packed streets bustling with life - today the city symbolises creativity and vibrancy with all the modern amenities. Also, Kolkata has the country's first Metro railway yet retains some buildings which are more than hundred years old. It is a city of enduring charm.

Kolkata is also a city with strong cultural, literary and religious flavours. This is the home of many of India's leaders. Frequent activities in the fields of fine arts, music, dance, theatre and writing make the city a happening place and have earned it the appellation ‘Art Capital of India’.

Kolkata is close to the exotic eastern part of India with its Himalayan lakes and forests, orchids and butterflies, monasteries and handicraft centres. Closer are the revolutionary university established by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore at Shantiniketan and the wildlife sanctuary at Kaziranga.

Besides all the manifestations mentioned already, Kolkata is an ideal city for conferences and conventions. A centre of industry and commerce, the city has some of the finest and oldest luxury hotels in the country. Although steeped in Victorian architecture and aesthetics, the lavishly appointed conference venues of the city offer all contemporary amenities and facilities for a successful residential meet.
