Tadoba National Park

Area: 116 sq km

Description: The Tadoba National Park, a Project Tiger Reserve, has a rich dry deciduous forest which houses more than a thousand species of plants, 28 species of mammals, around 20 species of reptiles, 5 species of amphibians, besides a large variety of fish and insects, and 181 species of birds.

Prominent Birds: The prominent birds which can be seen in this sanctuary are the grey headed fishing eagle, the crested serpent eagle, the honey buzzard, the peacock, the crested tree swift, the stone curlew, the paradise flycatcher, the bronze winged jacana and the lesser golden-backed woodpecker.

Best Season: Although the park is open for visitors throughout the year, the best time to visit this sanctuary is from April to June.

Access: The nearest town is Chandrapur at a distance of 45 km, which has a railway station. The nearest airport is at Nagpur, 205 km away. Accommodation is available for those who wish to stay over in the park.

Satpura National Park

Description: A sanctuary of special interest to bird enthusiasts is the Satpura National Park. The best time to visit is from April to June.

Prominent Birds: The Satpura National Park harbours birds like the ashy minivet, paradise fly-catcher, shama, Malabar whisting thrush, racket-tailed dronge, woodpecker, etc.

Best Season: The best time to visit is from April to June.

Access: Satpura National Park can be approached from Panchmarhi which is connected by regular bus services from Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Nagpur, Pipariya and Chhindwara. Taxis are available at Pipariya, 47 km away, which is also the most convenient railhead. The nearest airport is Bhopal (195km), connected by regular flights with Delhi, Gwalior, Indore and Bombay.

Accommodation: Although only accommodation is available within the park, Pachmarhi is a popular hill resort and has many small and medium hotels, which provide you with good accommodation. If you wish to stay within the park, the Churna Tourism Bungalow is adequate.
