Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary

Area: 72 acres

Description:: The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary, spread over 72 acres of marshlands, is one of the most fascinating breeding grounds in India. The sanctuary is dotted with trees suitable for the nesting of many species of water birds, mainly from December to March but nestlings can be seen as late as May.

Prominent Birds: Prominent birds are the painted stork, grey heron, little egret, median egret, grey pelican, white ibis, glossy ibis, spoonbill, darter (snake-bird), large and little cormorants, open-billed stork, cattle egret, pond and night herons, moorhen, grebes, dabchick and red-wattled lapwing.

Best Season: The best time to visit is from October to March, when migratory birds can also be seen.

Access: The nearest airport is at Madras, 85 km away while the nearest railhead is at Chingleput, 28 km away. Accommodation in the Forest Resthouse ia available for those who wish to stay over.

Point Calimere Bird Sanctuary
